We had the long holiday weekend so my wife sent me to Wisconsin to spend some time with my son and do some fishing up there. We had spent most of our time fishing two main areas, One being the NSP Dam, putting a canoe in and just working the rougher areas of water which was heavy in boulders. We tossed mainly fatheads on leadheads catching a lot of walleye, smallmouth bass, one very huge catfish and a very nice Northern. My son was working his rigs slower than I was, mainly bouncing off the bottom to pick up a good number of walleye, while I worked mine a little faster to catch some very good numbers of smallmouth bass.
Spot two was at Jim Falls, this was a very good area, closer
to the falls by the split islands. We hit this spot and within
10 minutes we were picking off smallmouth bass at a pretty
steady pace. The smallmouth were relating to areas with a very
slight break in the current and usually right in the area of
boulders, which meant a lot of snags and a lot of time rerigging,
but with the amount of bass we were catching, we did not mind
at all.
Chippewa River was very good to us, with us boating
at least 30 fish a day, covering all the species you could
ask for. Smallmouth bass, walleye, northern, catfish and even
a crappie. The only thing that escaped our hook set was a sturgeon,
which we did come across many of them at NSP. Looks like I
will have to make more trips up there, but this time pull my
boat with me so we can really target the sturgeon next time.
