Countdown till Spring

Who is doing the famous countdown till spring? I know I am! I count every day that goes by until the hot weather comes back.
Speaking of "countdown" I would like to talk about using a great "countdown" lure that is great for spring. Some examples are
worms, grubs and any soft plastics rigged with a weight light enough to make it sink at the just right speed( about a foot a second
is a good speed). Everybody knows how great salamanders trigger strikes during the spring due to them comming out of hibernation
in great numbers. A lot of bass rely on those slimy creatures for food in the springtime. Here is a great method to fish this type of
lure during the spring. A lot of companies make a whole bunch of different types of salamanders. But I have my favorite! The company is called
Popeye's Baits. They have a lure called the "Water Dog". It looks a lot like a salamander in its actual size and weight. Most
salamanders have a feature that bass seem to like. That is, there fairly large head and long tail. Most companies don't pay
close enough attention to this important feature. Popeye's Baits didn't miss out! The Water Dog looks a lot like the actual
spring salamander. And an other great thing about this lure is that you don't need a weight to fish it! The company made the
lure have a "countdown" action. That is, it slowly sinks about 1 foot a second which is great for triggering strikes. That is
because the bass have time to look at it, smell it and strike. I know that because I can actually studied fish before they strike.
An other good thing about Popeye's Baits is that they have this method of cooking the scent in the! lure. So that means it stays inside the lure till the last bite. Now here is how to fish this lure! Place it on the hook. The best type of hook is a bass hook where the neck is bent close
to the eye. Simply cast it out as close as possible to cover of any kind and as far away from you. Depending on the depth,
let the lure sink about 3/4 of the way to the bottom. Example, if the water is 4 feet deep count 3 seconds. Then twitch the
your rod upwards not too hard so the bait looks like its injured. Fish will often strike while the lure is sinking so take a good
look at your line! I use either Fireline or Remington Power lokt due to their low stretch. If you feel a bite wait about 3 seconds
and set the hook hard! You can catch big bass during the springtime using this method. You just have to take your time to
do things right. If you have any questions or comments or want more information about Popeye's Baits contact me at
