Preventative maintenance is important
to keep your vehicle running, but WHERE you go can be just as important
as what you do.
They are lots of places to get your tow vehicle serviced these days – quick
lube shops, independent garages, even shade tree mechanics. Back in the
“good ‘ole days,” you could pop the hood and do most of the work yourself,
but this is the 21st Century… it looks like a NASA control center
under there, with all the computerization and diagnostic stuff.
During the course of the tournament
season, I will put at least 15,000 miles on my Silverado, as it tows
my Ranger 518DVX with its
tandem trailer (a great option, by the way, for smoother trailering
on the highway!). For my money, I find that my Chevrolet dealer,
Bill Stasek Chevrolet (www.stasekchevrolet.com)
in Wheeling IL, takes care of everything – for less time and money
than running around to a bunch of places to get work done.
Since Chevrolet built my vehicle
and trains their “technicians” (a.k.a. 21st Century mechanics)
on how to fix them, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that they are the best equipped
to fix it right. As for Stasek Chevrolet, their technicians are ASE
certified and have the latest state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment (which
means less time spent with the service department! – not that they aren’t
great guys).
Between service visits, it’s your job
to check things out. Before I hit the road, I always walk around the truck and
trailer and check for any damage. I check the condition and air pressure in
all of the tires (including the trailer). I also make sure my Silverado’s
fluids (washer, coolant and brake) are fine. Since my RangerTrail wheels
have COOL hubs, I make a quick check of their oil level too. I check my
trailer lights to make sure they all work, as well as my boat tie downs and
hitch connections to make sure I don’t lose anything on the road.
We all have our favorite fishing
partners. The service department where you purchased your vehicle should
be one of them, because
they are going to keep you running right. After all, you can’t fish if
you can’t get to the water!
