Looking for the right tow vehicle? C.Y.A.!
by Jeff Morton
Picture this scene: Mr. Bass Boater goes
into a truck dealer looking for something to tow his boat. After
spending hours (or days) pouring over all the
options, he gets just what he wants: a BIG block V-8,
leather seats, power everything, even heated drink
holders – you know, the works! Yet, the first time
he pulls his boat up a fairly steep hill, he gets the
feeling that someone should get out and help push – not a good feeling.
Even though he got the “big motor,” Mr. Bass Boater’s
rear axle ratio might be too light for his needs,
which can seriously impact towing ability. For
example, with a properly equipped, two-wheel drive
2002 Chevrolet Tahoe with a Vortec 5300 V-8 and
automatic transmission, you can pull 6,700 pounds
with a 3.42 rear axle. However, with a 3.73 rear
axle, that same vehicle will pull 7,700 pounds – 1,000 more pounds,
which equates to easier towing.
My dealer, Bill Stasek Chevrolet in Wheeling, IL
(www.stasekchevrolet.com), takes time to ask the
right questions – so they put you in the truck best
suited for your needs. However, if the dealer
doesn’t ask, you should ask them – or better yet,
read the sticker yourself. When it comes to towing,
more is better. For a few dollars more, you can get
a vehicle that will pull your boat efficiently and
effortlessly. Not only will this make you a happy
owner, but will potentially keep you out of the shop
from overworking your vehicle.
So when looking for a tow vehicle, CYA - Check Your
Axle - you’ll be glad you did.
