-
Depth finders were designed originally to find
submarines. But they can find fish, bait and structure when properly
tuned.
-
Spend half a day with the unit and learn how to use the features.
-
Properly adjusted, you can SEE a one ounce
egg sinker go to the bottom and then pick it up and drop it.
Be sure the sinker is "in" the
cone angle and sit still to see it.
-
Depth finders send a sound wave into the
water and anything this sound wave "hits" or "sees" is returned
as an echo.
-
Depth finders do not lie, as long as the fish I D feature is turned
off.
-
If you are bass fishing, set the depth
finder to the depth you are fishing. The rule is "SEE THE BOTTOM" Adjust
the depth range to take full advantage of the screen. Do not
waste
the screen.
-
Depth finders will not explode so do not
be afraid to "tune" them.
No one has even been killed by a depth finder exploding.
-
Depth finders have a factory reset feature. If you mess one up, this
feature will take the unit back to factory settings.
-
Set the Gray Line or Color Line at 55% for monochrome and 75% for
color.
-
If you have not seen a Lowrance color unit, go to a retailer or buy
on and see the HUGE difference.
-
Set the power aka sensitivity based on the depth of the water you
are fishing. In less than 25 feet set the sensitivity at 60%.
At 30 feet and greater, set the sensitivity at 87%.
-
Set the chart speed at maximum. You can always go back over something
and look at it again.
-
Always have a couple of markers out and ready and throw then as soon
as you see something on the depth finder. Now ride back over
the spot. Paint a couple of markers black so other cannot see what
you marked.
-
If you really want to "See" what"s down
there, get any Aqua Vu under water camera. You can see the
fish and the structure.

-
Cut a tennis ball in half and put it over the transducer to protect
it.
-
Wash off the transducer every 3 months
with warm soapy water to keep them clean. A dirty transducer
will not "see" well
to the depths.
-
Carry a spare tire? Carry a spare transducer and some zip ties. If
the transducer fails, you are blind.
-
Set the surface clutter low or off. Surface clutter is algae and
wave action and it should be ignored.
-
Cone anglers are generally 18% to 20%. That
means in 30 feet of water, the "circle" on the bottom is 10
feet +- in diameter. One for three feet.
