Jiggin for Big Bass during a Cold Front

by Wayne Jb

Don’t you just hate it when your fishing and suddenly a cold front apears. Well I used to be like that but I learned that bass will bite during a cold front. All you have to do is tease them a bit. In this article you will learn on how to ¨ tease¨ the fish during a cold front and make them bite.

During a day of fishing I discovered that bass get into a sort of feeding frezy right before a cold front. They will jump on anything that looks edible to them. The only reason the fish don’t bite during a cold front is because they are usally already stuffed with food! The only way to catch these fish is to tease them using a finesse type bait. Finesse baits are desined for one purpose only, to tease the fish. It also looks more tasty to them than other baits such as a crankbait etc… One finesse bait I love to use is the Strike King Bitsi Bug. The Bitsi Bug is a small jig made in a variety of colors armed with an eagle claw hook and a weedless barbs. (actual size)

Their weight is only 1/16 th of an ounce. I usally tie this lure on a flippin rod. I put a lot of sent and flavor on them such as Berkley Power Sent and an Uncle Josh trailor hooked on the back. Flavor and texture are key elements to cold front fishing. Why? Because the bait has to look as natural as possible to the fish. Remember that the fish arn’t very active during a cold front so they won’t go for your lure, your lure has to go to them where they want it, in front of their noses.

The first thing you have to do is locate the fish. You can’t catch anything that’s not there. During a cold front fish tend to hang out in tight places such as tree stumps, deep holes, fallen trees etc… OK now that you have found the fish your ready to catch them. Make sure that your bait has enough sent and flavor on it or the fish won’t be interessed! Flip your jig close to any rock, log or branch you see where the fish might be and let it sinkall the way to the bottom. Watch your line closly because fish might hit during its way to the bottom. If not give your lure the littlest twitches so it looks injured. Don’t lift the jig more than a foot off the bottom. Make your lure go up slowly and them let it sink back to the bottom. You have to be patient to do this type of fishing. Even though the fish aren’t that active they will still strike hard enough for you to know. If you feel a bite wait at leased 5 seconds before you set the hook! Don’t worry, the fish won’t spit it out because of the sent.

I’ve caught some of my biggest bass during a cold front. And I know you will to!

Tight lines and god bless
