Where do fish go when it gets hot?
By Jim "The Spinnerbait Professor" Hale
Hello this is my first attempt
at righting an article. So I hope yawls aren’t real critical
of me. I would like to discuss southern water bass fishing.
This is a subject that I have had a
lot of controversial discussions over. Everyone that I have met in
the south thinks about the same thing. When it gets hot the fish ALL
move DEEP. Believe me when I tell you this is only a myth. I have fished
from Canada to Florida. I have always fished shallow and will always
fish shallow.
The thing that a lot of people don't
understand is that fish DO NOT KNOW where they are. These fish only
know a couple of things, 1) the barometer, 2) the water temp, 3) and
that they are HUNGRY.
Let's start with #1) the fish
do know what the weather is doing, and it does have an influence on
what they are doing. Again myth #1 they do NOT all go deep. If most
people would do there study they would find that it affects their air
bladder. Hence making them not able to stay in the upright position.
Reaction to this is they move to dense cover, and lean on things so
they can stay up right. So what are you going to do when the weather
gets bad?????? If you have done your studies you are going to slow
down and work the brush. With a worm or jug or something that will
probe the stuff well. By the way work it real slow and methodical.
NOW...#2) This is a very fought about
thing for everyone. The water temp DOES affect the bass. The hotter
the water the less a bass is going to chase a fast bait. It burns to
much valuable energy in the hot water. But I believe that this is the
time to throw big blade spinnerbaits, kind of like the winter. They
don't want to chase a bait but if you put a big bait by them slowly
they will hit it. This is the time of year that I tell everyone that
if you are not accurate you are not going to get a bite. These bass
are not going to run for the bait. If you get it within inches of there
mouth they will bite it. If you miss by a foot they will not even look
at it.
#3) this is another good subject. How
many guys have heard, I could see the bass and he wouldn't hit anything
I threw at him... I personally have heard it about a million times.
If that fish is not hungry he or she is NOT GOING TO BITE. However
sometimes you can aggravate them into biting. If you have the time
to you can just keep throwing to them until they hit. But now if you
think about it did you aggravate the fish or did it finally get hungry.
This is one of those subjects that I don't think anyone can answer.
Now I don't have too much to say now
except. I have heard from people that are fairly educated, as which
I am not one of them. I have just learned from days on the water and
a lot of time fishing. Some of these people that tell me these things
are good fishermen, but they have heard this for so long that they
believe what they are saying. It must be the trained response thing,
which by the way I believe bass get also.
Well I hope this helps somebody as I
am sure it will make some mad. But just remember I am not telling you
that this is the final word it is just my opinion I some things that
I have learned from a lot of time and experience on the water. The
next time you go out to the lake, pond, or what ever your favorite
fishing hole is, just give this some thought.
