Spotting Spots from Spot to Spot with Rob Jordan
by Wayne Wooten
When I contacted Rob about doing this interview I ask him if it would be OK to bring our mutual buddy Tom Branch, Jr. (Lowrance College Recruiter) along and that I would write while you guys fish. He said that would be great because he had a Lowrance question for Tom. So here's what happened.
We left the ramp and didn't go far when Rob applied the skids, and jumped on the trolling motor. We were in about 30 feet off water over brush and Rob and Tom whipped out their drop shot rigs and began the drop shot jiggle.
Rob grew up in a fishing family, his dad, uncles, and cousins fished tournaments on West Point and Lanier. Rob fished his first tournament at the age of 5 with his dad and since then knew he wanted to have career in fishing, and well... he has it!
Rob is now 29, married and a graduate of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College with a degree in AAS Wildlife and Fisheries Science. He is a full time guide on Lake Lanier, custom lure designer and fishes the BFL, BASS Southern Opens as well as some local derbies.
Rob's sponsors are: Bass Pro Shops, Mercury Marine, Nitro Boats, Z Man, Shimano, Lowrance, CR Line, Fish Head Spin, Motor Guide, G Loomis, Seaguar and Stormr USA.
He began his custom lure creations while attending Abraham Baldwin Agricultrial College. Rob said "we fished Paradise Lake a lot and I noticed the bass were feeding on bream. I had some success with lures that resembled bream but thought I could do better with something that looked exactly like a bream." Pause.... Rob has a fish on the drop shot... he continues while running around the deck... "I bought a Rattle Trap and repainted it to look like a bream and it worked!" Pause.... The fish is in the boat, and he continues... "the next thing you know folks started asking me to paint some for them and that's how that began."
I ask Rob what lead him into the guiding business and he said, "I started guiding about six years ago taking some friends out and decided to pursue doing more trips using the internet. I didn't want to butt heads with the established local guides so I didn't jump their bait and tackle shops, and it worked. I have now been full time guide for three years. "It really took off after I won a BFL event on Lanier in March, 2015. I especially like taking father and son trips because I like to teach young people not just how to catch fish but learn to respect the sport and the fish. It bothers me to see folks beating the fish up flopping them around and all over the boat basically killing them. If we don't take care of the fish there won't be anything to catch and that is what we come here for."
When ask about his tournament fishing he said, "I have a three year plan to qualify for the Elite Series. I am going to fish the Southern and Northern Opens next year and well I'm keeping a lid on the rest."
Now Rob has another fish on and is swinging the boat away from the timber with the trolling motor and now it's a double Tom has a fish on... oh,... oh it's a big one, oh wait it's the trolling motor! While swinging the boat around it caught Tom's line. Tom; while laughing said, "Well you know that's fishing the drop shot!"
After that Rob and Tom discussed storing way points on the Lowrance HDS9 Gen3's and we headed back to the ramp.
I had a great time and learned a thing or three about spotted bass fishing from Rob today and some info about locating fish with electronics from Rob and Tom.
In my opinion Rob’s got what it takes and is a true Pro and ambassador for his sponsors and the sport.
