The Fall Spinner Bait Bite

The Fall Spinner Bait Bite
by Capt. Mike Gerry

Frog bite on Lake GuntersvilleThose of you that know me fairly well; know that I just love to fish Punisher spinner baits and the fall presents many opportunities to enjoy working spinner baits. The thing that happens every fall that makes it so much fun is that the bass once again become real active and no bait searches more water in the fall than a spinner bait.

The thing about it is that with all the grass covering so much water on Guntersville spinner baits can be fished in many different ways. You can get off the edge of the grass lighten up the size and weight of the spinner bait and work the edges around grass and cover water quickly and effectively. If the bass are still off deep points then you can increase the size and weight and work the grass down to 15 of so feet without an enormous amount of effort.

The flash and vibration of spinner bait allows you to attract feeding fish from a distance and find fish with different retrieve types in many different conditions. We always have a lot of wind in the fall and the spinner bait might be the most effective bait in a wind you can fish. Many times the wind will blow you off a spot, spinner baits allow you to cover your favorite spot from many angles in the wind and if the fish are there you will find them. Many times this time of year we have some hot wind free days; working spinner baits by slowly rolling it to a deep edge then letting it helicopter to the bottom is a very effective presentation in the fall. The flash when it helicopters down draws strikes and catches fish off the ledges during these types of conditions.

Lastly, with a high tip presentation you can also turn spinner baits into wake baits by just slowly rolling it near the surface of the water, it displaces water, attracts bites and catches bass by movement and vibration. No bait is more versatile or covers more area in the fall and you can experience some great catches!
