September 7 2007: Charlie Haralson
stopped by the store yesterday, and gave us a snapshot view of
what the fish were doing. And for the most part, it has been more
of the same. He has had some very nice stringers most days, but
the numbers are just not there right now. He said that you might
fish an hour without a bite, and then catch several fish in a short
time.. But the good news is that some of his fish have been very
nice.
From most boats I have heard the same thing..
Till
the water stabilizes, I suppose we can expect more of the same.
And speaking of which, the lake has come up another 1.48 feet
since our last post. That's since Tuesday folks.. And I expect
to see another 6" in a hurry...
Maybe more. The river at Laredo is back down from flood stage,
after cresting at 13.83 feet.. Flood stage is 8 feet. But there
is still a lot of water in the river headed our way. Be on the
lookout for floating debris.. Especially on the top of the lake.
September 4, 2007: The Falcon Watershed
has received some generous rainfall over the last week, and the
lake level is starting to reflect it. We are also benefiting from
some good releases from Amistad, and between the two Falcon has
risen to 285.36 or 15.66 feet low, up nine inches since last Friday.
And if I read the river right, we could get another foot in the
next week. (I think I'm getting a little giddy here...)
But the increase in water level has not been necessarily
good for the fishing. And I'm telling you nothing new, as fishing
has been a little off for a while, as previously reported. There
have been some reports coming in from anglers who HAVE caught some
nice stringers of fish, mostly on the lower half of the lake, and
mostly fishing water from 10-20 feet deep. And most folks are catching
fish near the main lake.
I was on the water on Saturday and Sunday, and still
found fish to be a little slow in the biting department. But when
you threw in the right bush or tree, it seems that you got bit
rather quickly. I guess I was just not throwing at the right trees.
Best reported Baits are still Watermelon Red, and I have been doing
quite well on Zoom Mag II worms in Plum when the light is low or
during cloudy conditions.
Even
though the lake is rising, water quality is excellent in most
locations. The river channel above Beacon Lodge is murky, but
creeks just off the chanel are nice and clear. We did not go
North of Chapote Creek. The water below marker 11 is all very
nice. There are a few floating hazzards in the upper lake and
river, so use caution at Ludicrous speed. We'll have more on
water levels and fishing as reports trickle in.
